Fluoridation in Waimairi
Sir,—The Waimairi District Council stalls yet again on fluoridation. We must wait another year and conduct a costly referendum to find out that which is already known — people do not want fluoridation. What concerns me is that as the councillors have already rubbished genuine submissions and ignored the results of their own survey, what will they do with the referendum results? The council appears to change the rules to suit it. • Previous surveys (e.g. amalgamation and swimming pool fencing) have resulted in decisions with even less response than the fluoridation survey. How many councillors were elected with 8500 votes or fewer? It disturbs me that a councillor such as Cr Hannafin can claim that he has read widely and accuse anti-fluoridationists of being “not intelligent enough to understand the facts” and then state that everyone has no choice but to use iodised salt. — Yours, etc., L. A. HITCHCOCK. December 17, 1985.
