U.S. asks Malta for hijacker
NZPA-Reuter Washington The American State Department said yesterday that it was seeking the extradition from Malta of a man believed to be the only surviving hijacker of an Egypt Air plane that was forced, down in Malta last month. A spokesman confirmed that an extradition request had been made to the Maltese authorities. He declined to say when the re-
quest had been made or~ whether any reply had been received. Another spokesman said that the Maltese had “expressed a determination to try (the alleged hijacker) for crimes committed -on ' Maltese; territory,” although, he said, that process would not necessarily preclude extradition later. The United States request was based on a law against holding Americans hostage.
