Seventeen lose jobs
PA Dunedin Seventeen staff at the Dunedin-based company, George and Ashton, were laid off yesterday, the Government’s economic policies being blamed.
The volatile dollar and dwindling export incentives shattered markets for the company’s main business line, refrigerated containers, said the general manager,
Mr Alex De Boer. The laid-off staff were high-calibre process workers, he said. With 30 staff left, George and Ashton is now structured at its “smallest feasible operating level.”
Orders for the company’s containers have fallen to two or three in recent weeks from a capacity of 20.
“Economic policies introduced by the Government over the last year have resulted in a very significant downturn in export orders, for which this company depends for 80 per cent of its workload,” Mr De Boer said. The company would now concentrate on the domestic market in other lines, with exports “the cream on the top.” »
