Squad grooming for Gawler

The training squad for next year’s world three-day horse riding event championships was named after the national competition recently. Nearer the world event, in May at Gawlo Gawler, South Australia, the Newmans New Zealand team will be named from the training squad. Its preparation for the first major equestrian title to be decided in the Southern Hemisphere will be planned and supervised by the trainer, Ixxdde Richaids.

The Newmans group has sponsored the New Zealand effort in a bid to follow up successfully Mark Todd’s Olympic gold medal win. Already part of the $65,000 sponsorship helped a young team to win the Trans-tasman Trophy at this year’s Gawler three-day event

The riders and horses selected for the squad are:Vaughn Jefferis and Silver Bridge (Matangi), Blyth Tait and Rata (Whangarei), Andrew Scott and Muir of Ord (Feeding), Trudy Boyce and Mossman (Tokoroa), Susan Tomlin and Jonathan Grace (Papakura), Tinks Pottinger and both Volunteer and Graphic (Tinui), Merran Hain and Chief (Gisborne), Vicky Hammond and Amigo (Winton), Mark Todd and either Charisma or Michaelmas Day (Cambridge). Todd will continue to carry out his training in England The squad's manager will be Judge Denis Pain, of Christchurrtu

All the New Zealanders based in Britain made their mark this year, with three of them appearing in the top 100. Besides Todd, Andrew Bennie was forty-ninth equal, and Andrew Scott sixty-sixth equal The British one-day event championships will be' opened to foreign riders next year. The advanced event will be at Gatcombe Park, and there will be two novice, and two intermediate contests, at differenct venues.
