Retailers welcome move

PA Wellington The Retailers’ Federation has welcomed the Government’s decision to bring forward the date on import duty cuts. The Government announced on Tuesday that the relief from duty on goods covered in last week’s economic tariff package would be brought forward

from January 1, 1986, to tomorrow. The Retailers’ Federation president, Mr John Nelson, said that the announcement would remove any confusion on the part of importing retailers as to how they should deal with goods arriving in New Zealand soon. However, he said that the timing of the announcement

would affect the Christmas seasonal trade, particularly in consumer items not made in New Zealand. “Buyers should be aware X that retailers should not be expected to immediately pass on reductions in tariff -■ on existing stock lines as * such a decision would adversely affect the viability of their current opera- .. tion,” he said. ■;
