Dairy decision criticised

PA Wellington The Government’s decision to withdraw proposals to settle 26 dairy units has been condemned by Federated Farmers lands committee and dairy section chairmen. In a joint statement, they say that the decision brings the total number of dairy, sheep and beef settlements which have been deferred or cancelled to a total of 90 since the Government came to power. They point out that the Labour Party manifesto identified a specific commitment towards land settlement and getting young farmers on to the land. It was a case of another election promise “ignored blatantly” by the Government. The two men called on the Government to take the initiative in settling ballot farms at a realistic price. This would give encouragement to prospective young farmers as well as injecting support to get land sales moving again.
