Maori exhibition to be promoted
PA Wellington The Tourist and Publicity Department will spend $50,000 launching the exhibition, “Te Maori.” The sum is part of $600,000 being spent by the department in taking the exhibition of 175 Maori treasures on an extensive North American tour which began in September last year. Private travel groups have given a further $470,000 to help finance the exhibition.
“Te Maori” had generated more interest for New Zealand within the United States than any other event organised by the department in the last 20 years, said the department’s marketing officer for North America, Mr Geoff Dillon.
The money spent staging the exhibition had paid for itself many times over. “Previously, exposure by “Te Maori’ has reached an estimated 20 million Americans. We are taking the opportunity to inform North Americans of our indigenous Maori culture,” Mr Dillon said.
“Using that as a springboard we can portray New Zealand as a visible and high-attraction holiday destination.”
“Te Maori" will finish its North American tour in Chicago at the end of May and is due back in New Zealand in July.
