Amalgamation
Sir,—l was interested to see that Sir Hamish Hay was annoyed about the actions of the Mount Pleasant rates committee. It makes me wonder why he should be even remotely interested. However, it has occurred to me that if the amalgamation goes ahead he will be in a position of greater power. I would say that any moves toward any form of larger control by single persons is to be avoided at all costs. What amazes me is that he is suggesting that it would be cheaper to join the Christchurch City Council. Is he suggesting that he is about to subsidise the Heathcote ratepayers when they become part of the greater scheme? Would this be initially, and what happens when he has total control of the whole of Christchurch? This is an open invitation for rate abuse and we can expect rates to skyrocket because there is no other body to compare rates with. I trust this clarifies the situation, and I look forward to no amalgamation. — Yours, etc., CHRIS CHASTON. December 5, 1985.
