National Party leadership

Sir,—Oliver Riddell’s article on Mr George Gair (“The Press,” December 4) offers a logical and saNe solution to the National

Party’s leadership wrangles, as while the in-fighting continues the party continues to self-destruct. It is now too late to debate the merits of the treatment Mr McLay is receiving. Rightly or wrongly his position is unsalvageable. Mr Bolger’s compromises with the Muldoon faction ensure that he would be no more successful than Mr McLay. For all the reasons espoused by Mr Riddell, George Gair must now surely be the only person who can lead the National Party out of its present mess. A person of the calibre of Michael Cox could well be his deputy. With them at the helm of the Parliamentary Opposition, New Zealand would cease to be the one-party State it currently is. Regardless of one’s political persuasion, that is surely vitally important. — Yours, etc.,

A. M. SIMSON. December 4, 1985.
