Situations Vacant Situations Vacant department of conservation MINISTRY FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AS PART of the reorganisation of environmental administration approved by Government in September, two new organisations, the Department of Conservation and the Ministry for the Environment, are to be established. Applications are now sought for the permanent heads. The appointees for both vacancies will be expected to take up their positions as soon as possible. They will work initially with the State Services Commission (particularly the Environmental Secretariat) and with affected departments on aspects related to organisation, finance, accommodation, appointment and transfer procedures for staff and legislation. Once the organisations are formally established the appointees will assume control of them. DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION The Department of Conservation is to be the advocate for conservation. Apart from the general promotion of conservation values throughout the community, the department will be responsible to the Minister of Conservation for managing most of the Crown owned protected natural areas, fauna and historic places and for managing other large areas of the Crown estate which is neither legally protected nor set aside principally for commercial forestry or farming. There will be considerable potential for the development of recreational facilities on these lands. Major existing acts to be administered by the department include National Parks, Reserves, Wildlife, Wild Animal Control, Historic Places. Much of the land to be administered is currently held under the Land Act or the Forests Act. Staff for the department are expected to be drawn mainly from the Department of Lands and Survey, the New Zealand Forest Service and the Department of Internal Affairs. MINISTRY FOR THE ENVIRONMENT The Ministry for the Environment is to be a new central advisory agency concerned with ensuring that in the management of New Zealand’s natural and physical resources, full and balanced account is taken of all values placed by individuals and groups in the community on the quality of the environment. The thrust of the Ministry’s work will be on the development of mechanisms, including environmental assessment procedures, which ensure that due weight is given to environmental concerns by natural and physical resource managers in both the public and private sectors. The appointments will be made by the State Services Commission under Section 29 of the State Services Act 1962.
