Influence of TV
Sir,—Constantly on our television screens and lauded for his anti-nuclear policy towards the United States and France, and no sporting links with South Africa, David Lange has skilfully used television to promote himself and his Government. When we consider that murder, rape, violence, armed robbery, sodomy, etc. are now daily occurrences, we realise that these evils, so often featured on our screens, are being accepted as the norm by each rising generation who are also influenced by offensive language, crude music, explicit sex and faulty speech. Television and other media, however, could be equally effective in promoting all the desirable worthy human qualities by recognising and encouraging honesty, unselfishness, service to others, application, trustworthiness, etc. A good Government has the responsibility of promoting the best and discouraging the worst among citizens. Finding an effective procedure for eliminating strikes and. for overcoming the present evils in the media would be their finest achievement — Yours, etc., TED MULCOCK. December 2, 1985. ,
