Two Knights, Dame invested by Sir Paul

PA Wellington The Governor-General, Sir Paul Reeves, invested two Knights and a Dame at his first investiture yesterday morning. < The two new Knights are Sir George Laking, who received his knighthood after a long and distinguished career as a diplomat, which included postings as Ambassador to the United States and as Acting High Commissioner to London.

He also served as Secretary of Foreign Affairs and headed the Prime Minister’s Department. He was Chief Ombudsman from 1977 to 1984.

Sir Keith Sinclair is New Zealand’s best-known historian and is professor of history at Auckland University and president of the New

Zealand Book Council. Dame Jean Herbison is well known as an educationist and has been deputy director of the Christchurch Polytechnic since 1975. She was the first president of the New Zealand Educational Administration Society, and is Chancellor of the University of Canterbury. A Wellington businessman, Mr Lyndsay Papps, was invested C.M.G. by Sir Paul. Mr Papps, a partner in the law firm of Bell Gully and Company, is best known as a director and chairman of numerous New Zealand companies. From 1982 to 1985 he was chairman of the Railways Corporation. Mr Peter Butler of Upper Hutt was invested as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (C.8.E.).

Mr Butler has been secretary of the Wellington Builders’ Labourers’ Union and secretary of the Wellington Local Bodies Officers’ Union, a member of the F.O.L.’s national executive and a Wellington city councillor. - Mr Butler has been an active member of the Labour Party for 66 years. Among others to be invested yesterday were the former Commissioner of Works, Mr Robert Norman, who received the Queen’s Service Order and the former Government Printer, Mr Peter Hasselberg, who also received the Q.S.O.
