Rebels defect
Afghanistan said that 539 Muslim rebels had defected to the Soviet-backed Government near the western city of Herat Radio Kabul said that the rebels belonged to the Jamiat-i-Islami Party, the main guerrilla fighting force in northern and western Afghanistan. Western diplomats say that rebels in exposed positions sometimes surrender to Government forces at the start of the winter to secure arms and pay during the cold months and then resume attacking Afghan Army positions in the spring. — Islamabad.
