Hands Down nearing retirement

The future racing of the old favourite of Addington crowds, Hands Down, will be decided after he contests a 2600 m free-for-all on the second night of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s New Year meeting on January 3. The 10-year-old, the veteran of 114 starts, showed that he retained much of his former dash and determina-

tion when he made ground late for seventh in the Christchurch Airport Free-for-all on the final night of the Cup carnival last month. “Things didn’t go his way in the Cup and he was

inclined to mix his gait,” said his trainer-driver, Derek Jones. “He went more like his old self on the last night and I decided to delay his retirement at least until that free-for-all at Canterbury Park.” Jones agreed that this would probably be his last season of racing no matter what happened on January 3.

Hands Down, with a record 23 wins to his credit at Addington, has had 31 wins altogether and with 17 placings he has amassed $310,480 in stakes for his Omarama owners, Mr and Mrs Bill McAughtrie.
