Regal Nugent should find Methven track to her liking

By

G. K. YULE

The proven staying qualities of Regal Nugent on grass tracks could be the deciding factor in providing her with an overdue win in the K. M. McTigue Seed Dressing Pace at the Methven Trotting Club’s meeting tomorrow.

Regal Nugent has not 1 been successful since Febru- 1 ary last when she beat Likely Lord at the end of a • smart 2600 m at Addington i Raceway. However, she has run up quite a list of plac- i ings in the meantime, her 1 most recent being a splendid second behind the speedy Saucy Star in the D.B. Geraldine Trust Cup at Orari last Saturday. F In that race she met trouble early after starting from 20m, the same mark on which she will line up tomorrow. She put in a big run over the last 600 m and, although she did not look like catching the winner, she beat the others almost as convincingly.

Added to that she has quite a respectable record on the testing Methven track. She failed in her first attempt at four years at this meeting in 1983. Last December she was third to Spangled Lord and Coastal Trader in a tight finish to the same event she will contest at this meeting. Then, in April, she was fifth when Likely Lord won and recorded 4min 16s for the 3200 m. Last September she was more than a shade unlucky when third to Ruth-

less and Enterprise in the Methven Cup. She will not be worried should there be any easing in the track conditions and will not have to improve much on last week’s placing to come out on top. Hugo Porta showed that

he was on line for -his second success for the season when he came fast but a shade late for third at Orari last Saturday. Late Lustre is another proven stayer. She has not raced since November 19 when she came from near

last early for fifth at Addington Raceway. Her form this season has not been outstanding, but she has seldom had much luck. She should show worth-while form before too long and could prove more than a match for most in this field.

Venus Boy, Andronicus, Hamy’s Pride, Star Lady and the splendid four-year-olds, Nardinski and Greg Patron, both on 30m, should be leading contenders, while a big run from the backmarker, Winning Note, will not be a complete surprise.
