N.Z. woman killed in Island swim
NZPA-AAP Noumea, N. Caledonia A New Zealand woman was killed on Wednesday in the south of New Caledonia where she was on holiday in a sailing boat. She was Rosemary Smith, aged 45. She and her husband, Malcolm, aged 37, had rented a sailboat named Mare and were sailing in the lagoon. About noon Mrs Smith plunged into the sea near a small island named Mbo and because of the shallow water her head hit the reef. Her husband got her back into the boat and sent an S.O.S. for medical help. The French Navy sent a police helicopter with a doctor aboard who was winched down to the sailboat.
The doctor could only verify the death—a broken neck and death from drowning. Another Navy boat joined the Mare in the afternoon and returned Mrs Smith’s body to Noumea on Wednesday evening.
