Budd sets record

NZPA-Reuter San Diego Britain’s Zola Budd set a course record to win the Holiday Bowl-Heart of San Diego 10-kilometre race, but her lead was unexpectedly cut in the final stages. Budd, the world recordholder at 5000 metres, won in 33 min 15 sec., easily erasing the former course record of

34:26, set by Katy Schilly of the United States, last year. But the former South African was only 14s ahead of Lynn Nelson of the United States. Sue Berenda of the United States was third in 33:58, also well under the former record. The New Zealander, Ngaire Drake, was sixth in the women’s race in 35:10.
