National Party wrangles
Sir, — Two years ago your column had diehard National supporters writing cynical diatribes of erroneous prophecy to the effect that, due to internal strife, the Labour Party would never be voted on to the Government benches as voters could recognise their unsuitability to govern by their much publicised divided factional loyalties. How that contention has affected the thinking of those correspondents is unknown, as, regarding the current cavernous three-way split in the National Party, they seem reluctant to reiterate. With dissident axes being wielded with snarling abandon, right, left and centre, the National Party appears about to self-des-truct and consequently, its president, leader and aspiring contenders for those positions, according to National’s own supporters’ standards, are unsuitable for office. One wonders if the suspension/ reinstatement principle can apply at such levels and how such puerile behaviour can inspire confidence or possibly produce a new Prime Minister. — Yours, etc., ARTHUR MAY. December 2, 1985.
