Nelson raspberry crop presold
PA Nelson This season’s raspberry crop has been presold before growers have even begun harvesting the fruit, according to the Raspberry Marketing Council. The chairman of the council, Mr Horace Warnes, said that the industry was expecting to harvest more than 800 tonnes of fruit for export, all of which had been presold. So far 440 tonnes of blockfrozen raspberries have been committed to North American buyers, and a further 250 tonnes will go to the same market in concentrate form. Advance orders from Australia account for 112 tonnes of block-frozen fruit and there was a possibility of selling more, Mr Warnes said.
On the domestic market more than 400 tonnes have been presold to Butland Industries and the Apple and Pear Board.
Although prices have firmed recently to $2200 a tonne, Mr Warnes said the council accepted sales to the United States six months before harvest because they offered the industry some stability and an assured market.
He said the present price would barely compensate growers for increased costs.
