Israel apologises for spying in U.S.

NZPA-Reuter Te Aviv The Israeli Government, under pressure from Washington, has apologised to the United States over a spy scandal which has strained relations. Israeli leaders refused to comment after an American, Jonathan Pollard, was arrested in Washington 10 days ago on spying charges. A Cabinet spokesman, Yossi Beilin, said yesterday that spying against the United States was against Israeli policy. “Such activity, to the extent that it did take place, was wrong and the Government of Israel apologises,” he said. The United States Secretary of State, Mr George Shultz, praised the Israeli

statement, and said Israel would co-operate in the investigation into how Pollard, aged 31, a United States Navy Intelligence analyst, allegedly sold secrets to Israel.

The Israeli statement said those responsible would be brought to account if a Government inquiry confirmed the allegations.

It said Israel would dismantle a secret unit believed to have recruited Pollard.

The spy case has strained the usually close relations between Israel and the United States and United States officials have accused Israel of recalling two diplomats to prevent investigators from questioning them.
