Solveig top prospect at Cambridge

Special correspondent Auckland

Solveig is entitled to be a hot favourite for the Dulcie Stakes at the Cambridge Jockey Club’s meeting at Te Rapa.today. It would be a great surprise if she did not win, remarkable if she failed to get some of the stake.

Under the weight-for-age conditions Solveig has to carry 54.5 kg which is the bottom weight except for 49kg on the three-year-old filly, Ma Chiquita. As the Wrightson Filly of the Year last season and winner in her last three starts this time in, Solveig stands head and shoulders above most of those she will

meet today. In a regular handicap she would be required to give weight to all of them.

Against Solveig is a very wide barrier position although with such a run from the 1600 m, the rider, Grant Cooksley, should be able to position her so as not to cover too much extra ground around the first turn.

Considering the race she gave Solveig last time, in the Great Britain-New Zealand Stakes at Ellerslie on November 23, Eva Grace is a prospect to again get some of the money. Ebony Belle is certain to be very prominent and All Belles and Ibidem look well enough placed to go well.

Gold Lomond, a faint hope yet to get into the field for the Lion Avondale Cup, has the chance to help his claim in the Hamilton Handicap, a class two 2100 m race.

The top weight with 55kg in the Hamilton Handicap, Gold Lomond has 49kg in both the Avondale Cup and the Auckland Cup with only a faint chance, it seems, to get into the final field. A rehandicap for winning today would be a help.

A meeting of The Cowboy and the Two Thousand Guineas runner-up, Field Dancer, should provide a great race for the Glenroy Stud Handicap, a class three 1600 m event.
