Good efforts on slow pitches

The second day of junior cricket two-day matches last week brought many noteworthy performances. Slow, damp pitches meant that scoring runs was difficult, and this was highlighted by tow-scoring matches. In an A grade match between Burnside West and Hornby, lan Park top scored in compiling 31 of Hornby’s 92 all out Edward Burrows took 3/25 bowling for Burnside. In reply, Burnside could only total 85, in spite of scores of 25 from Michael Douglas and 23 not out from Nicholas Astwick.

Penetrative bowling from David Fazio and Ryan Halliday restricted the Burnside batsmen, and both players took three cheap wickets. An unbeaten half-century from Aaron Latimer led Burnside West to victory against Riccarton in a B grade match. Riccarton batted first and made 98, with Anthony Dale (33) and Simon Anderson (23) contributing well to the total. Graeme Rhodes 3/11 and Jonathan Devine 2/3 bowled extremely well for Burnside. In Burnside’s total of 106 Glen Sadler with 3/6 and Latimer were the best performers. An outstanding innings of 94 from Simon Carrodus was the highlight of the Old Collegians C grade innings. Carrodus backed this achievement up with a bag-full of three wickets for five runs, completing a very effective all-round dis-

play. Another fine all-round effort in the C grade was recorded by Anthony Sinclair for Old Collegians. He took four wickets, made 33 runs and also took a catch. Also outstanding was Patrick Thompson, who, in the Old Collegians second innings, scored 39 of the 52 runs off the bat and also captured a quick wicket Bumside West bowlers had a field day in the C grade, five of them registering excellent figures. Reon Bums took 4/1, Kent Buchanan 2/6 in the Belfast first innings, Andrew Condon 2/1, Nicholas Pritchard 4/0, and Sean Guerin 2/0. Timothy Doherty distinguished himself in the field with three catches and a run-out

A feature of the BelfastSydenham D grade match was the good wicket-keeping of Ryan Eustan and a very eventful, wicket-taking over from Regan Mitchell who took 4/1 in the space of those six deliveries.

In the first game of the junior representative calendar between Medbury and the Canterbury Invitation side, Scott Flewellen (61) and Dean Serra (34) batted well for Canterbury. Medbury held on for a draw and finished at 106/8 with William Sellar (26) and Chris Allen (22) showing out. Chris Bell and Bevan Seddon both took two wickets for Canterbury, as did Stephen Moorhead for Medbury.
