Bridge women increase lead

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian women have added two more victories to their successful record in the twelfth and thirteenth matches of the Far East Bridge Federation Championships. They extended their margin to 39 victory points (vps) after match 11.

Of a possible 100 vps in the first four matches of the tournament’s second round robin, the Australians have taken 96 with a perfect record, marred only when Hong Kong held them to 21 of the 25 points in their match.

As the first place finishers in the first round robin, they were seeded to play the lowest ranked teams first. .

The captain, Joe Greenfeld, said that while Australia still had the toughest teams to face, its increasing margin added a psychological edge.

It collected a total of four more vps in the second round than those they scored from the same teams in the first round.

In the open teams competition, Australia remained fifth, 25.5 vps behind first placed Japan, compared with 23.5 deficit after match 11.

New Zealand was in second place by 2.5 vps. With 13 matches complete, Open team standings (totals include fines for slow in brackets) were tn 242.5 vps (1.5), New Zealand 240 (3), Chinese Taipei 233 (2), Thailand 228, Australia 217 (4), Hong Kong 192, Indonesia 189, Philippines 123.5 (2.5), Macao 119.5 (9.5), and Singapore 106. Women’s standings were Australia 266, Japan 227, Chinese Taipei 218, China 210, New Zealand 196, Singapore 191, Hong Kong 189, Indonesia 183, Thailand 139, and Malaysia 101.
