Future of yards

Sir —The eventual disposal of the Riccarton sale yards was the topic of a television item tonight (November 12). It was suggested that the area could be used for high-density housing. The Christchurch City Council, together with the other local councils, should combine to see that this parcel of land is purchased for the city. There is always much pressure being applied for more car parking being made available for the users of Hagley Park. The Christchurch City Council is investigating ways and means to use the borders of the park for more parking. This must not happen. I would suggest that any opportunity to purchase the Riccarton sale yards should not be set aside. It could be a huge parking asset, and must not be lost to the city. — Yours, etc., B. R. HANSEN.
