HEAD, REFRIGERATION AND ENERGY SECTION THIS RESPONSIBLE POSITION involves supervision of a small R and D group of specialised professional engineers and technicians studying industrial refrigeration systems, energy and control engineering, and heat transfer physics. The appointee will plan and co-ordinate research programmes and liaise with the meat industry and appropriate engineering organisations. A chemical or mechanical engineering background is preferred with at least 10 years’ post-graduate experience and a proven high performance record in an investigational R and D role. BIOCHEMIST/MICROBIOLOSIST POLLUTION RESEARCH SECTION A scientist is required for research into biochemical and microbiological aspects of effluent treatment technology for the meat processing industry. Initial work will involve the microbiology of effluent-irri-gated pastures, the biochemistry of soil-plant responses to effluent irrigation, and the biochemistry and microbiology of anaerobic treatment systems. The appointee will be expected to develop and maintain expertise in these areas, and to act as a consultant to the meat industry. The preferred qualification is a M.Sc. or Ph.D. but graduates with a B.Sc. or equivalent will be considered. Post-graduate experience involving research is desirable. CHEMICAL ENGINEER CHEMICAL ENGINEERING SECTION A recent graduate in chemical engineering is required for research into meat industry by-pro-ducts. Persons completing university studies this year may be considered for this position. Work will involve research and development in such areas as ovine-based chemicals, tallow products, meat extracts, and chemical engineering aspects of processed meats. The position requires a person with initiative, who is able to work independently within a small professional team.
