Kiwi in Sandown Cup

NZPA-AAP Melbourne Kiwi, the 1983 Melbourne Cup hero, has been entered for Saturday’s $lOl,OOO Sandown Cup (2400 m His trainer Ewen “Snow” Lupton will start the eight-year-old gelding as long as the track is not too wet. Lupton said after Kiwi ran eleventh to What a Nuisance in the Melbourne Cup last week that the big chestnut was really not at home on the soft going and was unable to make up ground after being last at the 1200 m.

Lupton was also concerned that Kiwi had uncharacteristically sweated

up badly before the Cup. “He wasn’t himself on the day. He is usually very relaxed,” said Lupton. “He has picked up since his run in the Cup and is doing all right.” The New Zealand jockey, Noel Harris, will ride Kiwi in the Sandown Cup. Other Melbourne Cup runners entered are Our Boyfriend (6th), Black Knight (9th), Our Sophia (10th), and Sir Zephyr (16th).
