Diamond Moose wins sprint

Diamond Moose, transferred from the Toyota New Zealand Cup to the Firestone Eurosteel Mobile Pace by the New Zealand Metropolitan programme committee when acceptances for the meeting closed, came up trumps in the second leg of the T.A.B. double.

The eight-year-old El Patron entire led throughout to win in a dashing 2min 28.7 s for the mobile 2000 m, pacing his opening 400 m in 27.55, his first 800 m in 58.6 s and his first mile in Imin 59.25.

The only open class pacer in the field, Diamond Moose had not been successful for

his Culverden owner-trainer, Nelson Dalzell, since winning his second Kaikoura Cup just over 12 months earlier.

Ruthless, given a grand run handy with cover, ran on strongly late to be a length and a half from the winner, with the favourite Malaz fighting on for third after being in the open early, then pushed three wide from the 1300 m. King Aurea, back on the inner to the turn, made ground to finish next. The second favourite, Lady El, was three back early then in the open from the 1300 m and compounded to finish seventh.
