Man with bucket draws applause
The man trailing yesterday’s Canterbury Carnival Week parade with a bucket and shovel collecting the “exhaust” of the animal exhibits was more appealing to some onlookers than the $lOO,OOO-plus machinery. The overall-clad figure received applause from the crowds of shoppers and office workers who lined, the footpaths to watch the colourful parade, organised to mark the start of a week that includes the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral show and a feast of racing and trotting events. “Canterbury Carnival Week” started last year in an effort to link the happenings of the three organisations involved, the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, the Metropolitan Trotting Club, and the Canterbury Jockey Club.
“The thought was that with this week being among the biggest in the year for the city and the province, more of both the urban and rural populations should be made aware of what is happening and encouraged to attend one or more of the events,” said a spokesman for the organisers. Yesterday’s lunchtime parade from Latimer Square to Cathedral Square and back featured an array of agricultural machinery, horses, sheep, cattle, jockeys on their mounts, a ragtime band, clowns, and stilt-walk-ers who proved a favourite with the children.
