Dairy scheme under question
PA Wellington Speculation is rising over the future of the land settlement scheme for dairy farmers announced by the Government in September. High „ interest rates and the stronger dollar’s erosion of returns from dairy products are believed to be forcing the Government to consider trimming or axing its plan to settle 26 farmers on dairy farms next year, the “Dominion” reported yesterday. The land settlement programme for this season is a shadow of former schemes which catered for both sheep and dairy farmers. Announcing the limited measures on September 24, the Minister of Lands, Mr Wetere, said sheep farms were being excluded because of the crisis in that sector.
