Naude provided many thrills in long career

Naude, a 21-year-old bay gelding which has won 66 FJE.L events and earned more than $17,060, has retired from show jumping because of a leg injury. Bought by Ngaire Lamb, of Southland, as a 13-year-old, Naude gave his owner several big thrills, including a six-bar event at only his second attempt in Australia. Other great efforts by Naude were a placing in the New South Wales show jumping championships and the Australian Trust Grand Prix; five Grand Prix wins in one season (including South Canterbury where he

was last to go and looked to be in an impossible position to win; and winning the three big events at the Royal Show at Canterbury in 1982. For his previous owners, Naude had competed in eventing, round-the-ring and FRT. events before Ngaire bought him. Because of bad stopping problems, Naude was reschooled from the basics up and he slowly gained confidence. Except for the odd hiccup, he has’t looked back. Mrs Lamb said that although Naude had a big jump in him he was a very exacting ride. He was a

forgiving horse, but still remained spooky and suspicious and was extremely panicky if the wrong situation arose. Naude has often been used in the last couple of seasons as a training horse for pupils and many riders including 12-year-old Kerry Lamb, have learnt how a schooled horse should feel. Ngaire Lamb’s biggest disappointment with Naude resulted from not being able to compete in the Sydney Royal Show because of a lack of organisation, and not competing at his best when touring the North Island because of illness. RIGHT: Naude and Miss Ngaire Lamb, of Southland, showing the form that has won them many showjumping events. Naude has just been retired because of a leg injury.
