AUSTRALIA BHP jumps 62c

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian sharemarkets had one of the strongest days of the year, driven by strong demand for BHP scrip and rumours of possible take-overs, brokers said.

Near the close of trading, the all ordinaries index had added 19.0 points to 1031.6 and the all industrials marker had firmed 16.6 points to 1504.6. The all resources index climbed 20.2 to 665.2 and the gold index firmed 3.2 to 951.3. The national turnover was 49.5 M shares, valued at SIII.OM, with rises outnumbering falls by 230 to 173. BHP jumped 62c to a post share-split record price of 920 c amid speculation that the Perth millionaire, Mr Robert Holmes aCourt, may be preparing a 1000 c a share bid. More than 6M shares were traded, with the bulk handled by Mr Holmes aCourt’s traditional broker, Potter Partners.

Bell Resources rose 26c to 526, and Adsteam — linked with Bell Resources in a BHP options pact —90 c to 1050. Elsewhere among leading miners, CSR rose 9c to 355, Aberfoyle 10c to 910, CRA 6c to 566, Western Mining 8c to 350 and MIM 8c to 258.

Gold stocks were mixed, with Kidston falling 10c to 510, while Renison rose 16c to 530 and Niugini Mining 13c to 228. Banking stocks led the industrials market charge ahead of their profit announcements this week. ANZ rose 6c to 510, Westpac 24c to 506 and National Australia 5c to 485.
