Stop Live Sheep Exports The recent decision of the Minister of Agriculture means that up to a million live sheep a year will be exported to the Middle East for slaughter. This decision was made without prior consultation with the RSPCA. The Australian Senate Select Committee on Animal Welfare has called for an immediate ban on the export of sheep under the age of 2 years and long term the phasing out of all exports of live animals for slaughter. Evidence given before the Senate Committee clearly showed that the onboard death rate on the Australia to Middle East trade is between 5% and 10% and shows no sign of abating. Animals will be slaughtered in Middle East countries with no animal protection laws and under conditions that would probably breach New Zealand’s animal welfare laws. The farming industry of New Zealand may be in dire straits but is it morally right to seek a partial remedy by the infliction of unnecessary suffering on millions of animals? X If you object to the export of live animals for slaughter write to your Member of Parliament or post this statement (a postage stamp is required). Further copies of this statement may be obtained from the National Office, RSPCA, PO Box 52-111, Kingsland, Auckland.
