F.O.L. plan to end dispute

PA Wellington The Federation of Labour has revealed its plan for ending the month-long Tasman Pulp and Paper dispute at Kawerau. The F.O.L.’s secretary, Mr Ken Douglas, said it had suggested to the Minister of Labour, Mr Rodger, that he convene a compulsory conference under the Industrial

Relations Act. Mr Douglas said that as a “demonstration of good faith” the F.O.L. would affirm that there would be no disruption to normal work pending resolution of the dispute. The ban on a Canadian shipment of much needed newsprint being unloaded at Auckland would be lifted also, said Mr Douglas.

In return, the F.O.L. had asked that Tasman show similar good faith by lifting the lock-out at Kawerau and allowing workers to return to normal duties next week. Tasman locked out 640 pulp and paper workers a month ago in a dispute over their refusal to sign a document covering work changes, new technology, and dispute procedures.
