Women take most new jobs in Aust.

NZPA staff correspondent Sydney Jobs filled by women accounted for about 80 per cent of job growth in Australia during the last financial year, while growth in male employment fell sharply, according to figures given recently. Throughout the nation, female employment grew by 117,400 Jobs, or 4.8 per cent during 1983-1984, while male employment grew by just 31,100 jobs, or 0.8 per cent, according to the Institute of Labour Studies. The growth in women’s jobs<was down only slightly

from 5 per cent in 1983-84, but the growth in men’s jobs was down from 3.2 per cent. The slump in male employment was largely attributable to trends in New South Wales and Queensland. In New South Wales job growth was minimal, and in Queensland it dropped. Throughout Australia unemployment dropped from 8.4 per cent to 7.8 per cent in 1984-85, but the institute warned that the growth in jobs largely came at the end of the financial year and could be merely a transitory surge.
