Charge to be reheard

PA Wellington The trade union official, Rob Campbell, will have a rehearing of a charge of assault against him, a High Court judge has ruled. Campbell pleaded not guilty to assaulting the industrial relations manager of a cleaning firm at a cleaners’ picket of a building on May 16, 1984. He was convicted after a two-day hearing in the District Court but appealed against his

conviction. In a judgment delivered on Thursday, Mr Justice Eichelbaum said the conviction was unsafe. He quashed it and the fine imposed, and remitted the case to the District Court for rehearing. His Honour said he recognised the strength of the prosecution case but the principal plank of the defence, which bore directly .on the validity of the prosecution case, was put aside without adequate explanation.
