Street-name changes proposed in Woolston

Six street-name changes have been suggested because of the Woolston Cut flood relief development. Certain streets will be severed by the Cut and three new streets will be formed and will need to be formally named. Those streets affected include Dyers Road between Ferry Road and the junction of Tunnel Road and the Rutherford Street extension. This piece of road will become a cul-de-sac and residents will be given the choice of five names, approved by the Post Office and the Lands and Survey Department, to rename it. Tunnel Road to the Ferry Road roundabout will probably become Dyers Road. Rutherford Street will be

extended as the only vehicular bridge across the Cut. Bamford Street and Long Street will both be severed by the Cut and a small section of road running along the Cut bank has been proposed to join them in a crescent. This crescent will be renamed, residents selecting the name from the approved list. King Edward Terrace will probably disappear. The partly formed street will be likely be renamed Long Street in its northern portion and further work on the street stopped. A new road between Connal Street and Lane Street will also be named by residents from the approved list. The Cut severs Connal

Street. It' is proposed'that the street, between Catherine Street and Maronan Street, take the latter as its name. The Christchurch City Council will seek residents’ views before recommending specific name changes. Hurley Street Hurley Street will not chance its name to Avon Way. A suggestion for the change from a resident met approval from the City Council’s town-planning committee and the Post Office, but not from the other residents. In a survey of the 26 properties in the street 11 supported the change, 13 opposed it, and two had no opinion.
