Stock moves out of drought areas
PA Timaru Up to 20,000 head of stock are expected to leave the Hakataramea Valley, Waihaorunga, and Duntroon districts as the partially broken autumn and winter drought shows signs of returning. A meeting of the Haka-Duntroon-Waihaorunga cartage committee earlier this week approved the payment of cartage on 9935 sheep and 185 cattle for grazing out The senior adviser in the
Ministry of Agriculture in North Otago, Mr lan Warren, said yesterday that the committee estimated that 10,000 more sheep and 500 cattle had gone or were about to leave. Of the 9935 sheep, for which cartage had been approved, 4000 went to Southland, 3250 to different parts of Canterbury, and 1000 to South Otago with the remainder equally divided between Omarama, the West Coast, and Central Otago, Mr Warren said.
