Marist XV caps a good season
As well as winning the main senior title, the Marist club collected two other trophies in club rugby this winter. It took “The Press” Trophy for the club which averaged the most competition points per team in the grades, from under-19 down to sixth grade. Marist’s average was 27.4. New Brighton was second with 21.1 and Burnside and Belfast equal third on 17.7. Marist’s other trophy is the Referees’ Golden Jubilee Cup, a team competition from the under-20 grade down. It is for such things as dress, conduct and adherence to the laws. The winner was the Marist fifteenth grade side with 36.5 points. Medbury fourteenth grade was second with 36.27, and Shirley thirteenth grade and Suburbs twelfth grade equal third with 36.01. The Wilsons 45 South Cup, for the club with the best points average in the grades above under-19, was won by High School Old Boys, with 58.1 points. Burnside, 48.4, and Shirley, 47.7, were next. The Evans Shield, for the club gaining the most competition points in all grades, was won by Burnside. It totalled 484, to head off Marist, 471, Shirley, 462, and High School Old Boys, 447. New Brighton took the Redpath Trophy as the top club in the J.A.B. grades. It accumulated 204 points to finish well clear of Suburbs, 161, Linwood, 157, Burnside, 146, and Shirley, 128.
