Overseas trio in boat series
Three overseas drivers, including two former world champions, will compete in a new speed boat series in New Zealand this summer. Tom Stoller, of the United States, and Bob Spalding, of Britain, are former world champions, while Frank Menzies has won many Australian titles. The trio will compete in an international three-round mini series, which will be part of the six-round New Zealand Grand Prix championship. It was won last season by Peter Knight, of Christchurch, in The Boss. Three international rounds will be held over
successive week-ends at Lake Karapiro on February 9. The Grand Prix championship will then move to Lake Ruataniwha on March 29-30, Picton on April 6 and finally at Auckland on April 19-20. Spalding, a formula one tunnel hull driver, has won world, European and British championships in a 20-year racing career. Stoller and Menzies both drive flat-bottom boats. Stoller, known as the “King of the Flatties,” has been world and American champion. Apart from his many Australian titles, Menzies is also prominent in midget car racing.
