Children ‘can sell condoms’
PA Wellington The morals campaigner, Miss Patricia Bartlett, has been advised that it is not an offence for children under 16 to sell or handle condoms in supermarkets. Miss Bartlett said last week that she would seek a legal opinion on whether supermarkets allowing children under 16 to sell or handle condoms might be committing an offence under the Contraception, Sterilisation, and Abortion Act. “The opinion was that it was not an offence,” she said. Section 31 of the act said it was illegal for children under the age of 16 to “sell or dispose” of condoms, Miss Bartlett said. The lawyer said children’s handling and wrapping condoms in a supermarket situation was within the law. Asked whether she had any response to her call for a boycott of supermarkets selling condoms, Miss Bartlett said the boycott was up to individual choice. “Standing outside with placards is not our style,” she said.
