Selwyn in hockey quarter-finals

Selwyn, the beaten finalist last year, progressed to the quarter-finals of the national club knockout hockey competition with a narrow 1-0 win against Daniel Visser Sydenham at the week-end. Selwyn always looked the superior team, but an inability to complete numerous attacks kept it scoreless until five minutes into the second half. David Clements made a short break after gathering a loose ball, passed to Richard Schoeman at the top of the circle, who struck the ball first time into the net.

Sydenham thought it had equalised 10 minutes later. At a penalty corner the ball was laid off and the shot flew high into the net.

The umpire Dave Stuthridge awarded the goal, but then changed his mind when the Selwyn players pointed out the shot was the initial one at goal from the penalty corner and had to be under 45cm in height.

Raki Manihera continued to be a valuable forward for Sydenham. His bustling running on the right wing caused problems in the Selwyn defence.

Selwyn will meet the winner of a match between Liquorland Harewood and Taieri to be played on September 28. The semi-finals and final will be played on the artificial turf in Wellington at Labour Weekend.
