The day in Parliament

PA Wellington Parliament was expected to continue the Estimates debate on Tuesday and Thursday, the Acting Leader of the House, Mr Hunt, told Parliament yesterday. He said estimates to be considered would include Trade and Industry, Tourist and Publicity, Health, and the Post Office. There would be a general debate and consideration of private members' bills on Wednesday. Members presented two petitions when the House sat at 2 p.m. Mr N. H. Austin (Nat., Bay of Islands) presented the petition of Reinhard Gunter Kluge and 9150 others requesting that Parliament enact legislation to protect the future of the commercial and recreational snapper fishery. The petition said that trawling in inshore waters devastated snapper stocks. “Your petitioners, therefore, request that the House will ban trawling on the shore side in specific areas: on the west coast from Scotts Point to Reef Point; on the east coast from North Cape to Cape Karikari to Stephenson’s Island to Cavalli Islands to Cape Brett.

Members then began debating Police estimates. Estimates for the Police Department were approved. Members then began debating the Social Welfare estimates. Debate on the Social Welfare estimates was adjourned at 11 p.m. and the House resumed debate, under urgency, on the second reading of the Land Tax (Annual) Bill. This debate was interrupted when the House rose at 11.40 p.m.
