‘Payoff’ helps police
The police in Christchurch have reported a reasonable response to “Operation Payoff,” a national effort to round up receivers of stolen goods. Detective Senior-Sergeant David Haslett said that six people had telephoned the police with positive information about stolen property since the campaign began on Wednesday. A quantity of property had been seized and several other promising leads were being investigated. He was optimistic that arrests would result. Ten detectives are working full-time on Operation Payoff, plus several uniformed, policemen. Detective Senior-Sergeant Haslett said he was pleased that people were responding to the campaign, although he would like to hear from more people with information about stolen property. Callers could remain anonymous if they wished, he said.
