Approval for ‘last’ exchange

PA Wellington Approval has now been given to convert the last manual exchange in the North and South Islands to automatic equipment, said the Postmaster-General, Mr Hunt. The last manual exchange approved for conversion is at Lawrence in Otago but it may not be the last to be converted, he said. There are 29 manual exchanges still in use on the mainland, serving about 22,500 subscribers. All have been approved for automatic replacement exchanges and conversions are planned to be completed by 1988. The total cost of equipment and installation will be more than ?45 million. Only the small Waitangi exchange on the Chatham Islands will continue to run manually. Mr Hunt said consideration was being given to replacing it with an automatic system but it was dependent on overcoming special problems. It is planned to re-equip the exchange to take modern instruments and replace party lines next year.
