Hadlee second in bowling averages
NZPA staff correspondent London Richard Hadlee finished the English cricket season second in the bowling averages, and his fellow New Zealand test player, John Wright, was tenth in the batting figures. Hadlee bowled 473.5 overs for Nottinghamshire, taking 59 wickets and conceding 1026 runs, for an average of 17.38. His figures were boosted by a career-best 8 for 41 against Lancashire this month. The season’s top bowler was Richard Ellison, from Kent, whose 65 wickets cost an average 17.20 runs. Wright scored 797 runs for Derbyshire in 16 innings, two of which were undefeated, for an average of 56.92. His best score was 177 not out. The West Indian captain, Vivian Richards, topped the batting averages by scoring 1836 rjns for Somerset at an average 76.50. His 322 against
Warwickshire in June was the highest score of the season. Other notable feats this year were lan Botham's fastest first class century, scored off 50 deliveries and the Leicestershire bowler Jonathon Agnew’s, 9 for 70 against Kent.
