Probation officers impose ban
PA Wellington Probation officers throughout New Zealand have voted to impose some form of ban on the implementation of sections of the new Criminal Justice Act. Wellington and Lower Hutt officers voted on Monday not to implement sections of the act under present staffing levels. The president of the Public Service Association, Mr Colin Hicks, said that officers in 35 districts had met to discuss the issue and almost without exception had voted to impose some form of ban when the act comes into force on October 1.
Their action is an attempt to pre-empt staffing difficulties later on. The officers want 45 more staff appointed as soon as possible around the implementation date, so that they can be trained in their duties as soon as possible.
The Government has said it will appoint another 32 probation officers by April 1986, to deal with the new sentendthg procedures.
