Erosion hits Haka Valley
Wind erosion has caused a very serious problem in the Hakataramea Valley, says the Director-General of Agriculture, Mr Malcolm Cameron. He and the general manager of the Rural Bank, Mr Ray Chappell, on Monday inspected the devastation left by wind erosion in the valley, making an aerial survey and later travelling by road to see badly affected pasture and undernourished stock. Mr Cameron said there was no question that there was “a very serious problem” in the valley. The Ministry of Agriculture would have to look at giving its support, he said. Effects of erosion were variable, from some very bad areas to properties with irrigation and ground cover, Mr Chappell said. The Rural Bank had already given a lot of help but would have to consider further forms of assistance. The member of Parliament for Waitaki, Mr Jim Sutton, accompanied Messrs Cameron and Chappell.
