Aust. bid to drop duty on timber

PA Wellington The Australian Softwood Producer Council has asked the Australian Government to terminate its dumping and countervailing action on New Zealand timber imports. The move was announced in Wellington by the council’s chairman, Mr Roger White, following a meeting between the council and the New Zealand Timber Federation.

The duty was imposed in 1982 by the Australian Customs Department, which took dumping and countervailing action against timber imports from New Zealand.

With improved markets, the action was suspended in 1983; since then both indus-

tries have been working together to develop markets. Mr White said the request by his council made for total concentration on joint market development. The president of the New Zealand Timber Industry Federation, Mr John Davenport, welcomed the initiative and attributed it to the positive spirit which had progressively developed between the two industries.

He said he expected the meeting would produce a formal agreement on joint co-operation and market and product development both trans-Tasman and internationally.

The Australian and New Zealand delegates will visit the timber industry in Nelson as guests of the federation.
