Sir Zephyr to resume
NZPA-AAP Sydney The A.J.C. Derby runnerup, Sir Zephyr, showed at Randwick on Saturday that he was ready to take up where he left off in the autumn with a smart trial on the course proper. Sir Zephyr, trained by Brian Smith, will resume in the $40,000 Theo Marks Quality (1306 m at Rosehill next Saturday. Ridden by Shane Dye, Sir Zephyr, a leading contender
for the million-dollar Melbourne Cup (3200 m in November, was given an 800 m trial and ran the distance in 47.95, the last 400 m in 24 3s. Smith, who recently set up stables at Rosehill, said Sir Zephyr, narrowly beaten by Tristarc in the A.J.C. Derby at Randwick in April, would probably head for Melbourne after Saturday. “1’11 wait to see what the tracks are like down there before making a definite
decision,” Smith said, “If they are too bad he will stay in Sydney a while longer and run in the George Main Stakes.” The $125,000 George Main Stakes (1600 m will be run at Randwick on September 28. Sir Zephyr, a son of Zamazaan and a Zephyr Bay mare, proved himself one of the best stayers in the country last year. He has amassed $147,905 from 19 race starts.
