Fluoridation
Sir,—The article, “Scientific reports back fluoride use” (August 23) is, like its heading, very misleading. Contrary to what Dr Malpress may think, epidemiological studies have proved the dangers of 1 fluoridation at 1 ppm. The BurkYiamouyiannis cancer-fluoride link i has not been refuted and has beenupheld in three major court cases ? in the United States — in Pitts- * burgh, Illinois and Texas. Like John Colquhoun, the New Zealand Medical Research Council has f, found high amounts of tooth mot-? tling as a result of fluorides in Auckland school children. As Dr Malpress should know, the dental ” health in his own areas of non- ” fluoridated Christchurch and fluoridated Waimairi are the same. Also ' contrary to what he states, Chile stopped fluoridation, after 20 years, when Professor Albert Schatz published his report in that country' ‘ which showed an alarming in-.. crease in infant mortality and birth > defects. — Yours, etc.,
